Radial shaft seals
Oil seal — a reliable sealing ring for rotary motion
The main purpose of an oil seal is to prevent oil and grease leaks from a machine at points where rotary motion is transmitted. These are most commonly the points where the shaft exits the machine housing.
Learn the basics of oil seal construction.
An oil seal consists of a rigid case and a flexible sealing lip with or without a spring. It may also have a second lip, a dust lip, that prevents contaminants from entering the machine. A wide range of oil seals is available with different sealing lip and case shapes.
What materials can oil seals be made of?
The materials most commonly found in oil seals are nitrile rubber NBR and fluorocarbon rubber FPM (FKM, Viton). NBR offers high flexibility and abrasion resistance. FPM, in turn, withstands much higher temperatures. FPM oil seals are commonly called high-temperature oil seals.
