Shear nuts

Shear nuts AN 94 made of A2 stainless steel

Shear nuts, also known as breakaway nuts, are used for fastenings intended to resist loosening with an ordinary spanner. After correct installation, the breakaway hexagonal section separates from the body that remains on the thread. In this NERON category you will find AN 94 designs in A2 stainless steel, in sizes M6, M8, M10, M12 and M16. Match thread, dimensions and pack quantity to the project.

Shear nuts AN 94 — fastenings with limited disassembly access

A shear nut has a tightening section and a threaded body. During installation, the hexagonal section separates at the intended break point. The remaining body makes loosening with a standard spanner more difficult. This solution can be considered for guards, housings, fences and fittings where the design specifies a connection without routine disassembly.

Sizes and packs in the range

The product pages reviewed cover AN 94 A2: M6 in packs of 2 and 100 pieces, M8 in 1 and 100, M10 in 1 and 50, M12 in 1 and 25, and M16 in 1 and 10 pieces. Check piece count on the selected product page. Thread size and pack quantity are separate parameters.

What should be checked before choosing a nut?

Thread: diameter and pitch matching the screw or threaded rod.
Geometry: height, body diameter, bearing surface and space for the installation tool.
Material: compatibility of the A2 design with operating conditions and mating component materials.
Installation documentation: break-off parameters, screw requirements and how the correct clamping force is achieved.
Servicing: possibility of subsequent component replacement after the installation section breaks off.

Installation according to the specific design data

Do not assume a universal break-off torque from thread diameter alone. Parameters and tool should match the design documentation. Breaking the hexagonal section does not replace assessment of complete connection load capacity or compatibility of screw, nut and fixed components.

Frequently asked questions about shear nuts

Can the nut be loosened with an ordinary spanner after break-off?
The construction restricts this removal method. Consider future servicing before installation. It is not equivalent to an ordinary nut for frequent loosening.

Does a shear nut guarantee protection against every disassembly attempt?
No. It makes removal with a standard tool more difficult but does not independently guarantee protection of the entire assembly.

How do you prepare an enquiry for NERON in Piła?
State AN 94, thread size, A2 design, required nut quantity and application. For an existing fastening, a drawing or body dimensions and screw data are useful.

Compare intended uses in the section for special-shaped nuts. For connections requiring another installation method, choose the appropriate catalogue group of hexagon nuts.
