How are steel tubes manufactured?

Steel tube manufacture is a complex process involving several technologically advanced methods. The first production stage is selecting raw materials. Tubes are most commonly made from stainless, low-alloy and high-strength steel, although the final choice depends closely on the intended application. The chosen material is then melted in metallurgical furnaces.

The most popular methods of forming steel tubes are hot rolling, cold drawing and welding, including arc, resistance and laser welding. Heat treatment and finishing are the final production stages. Techniques used include normalising and annealing, as well as galvanising and coating. Once all work is complete, testing and quality control are required. These involve strength tests and non-destructive inspection using ultrasound, radiography and magnetic particle testing.
