Another benefit of keys is their versatility. Of course, they are useful only in keyed connections — they cannot be used in Woodruff key connections or as wedges. However, keyed connections are found in a vast number of machines used in sectors such as:

• mechanical engineering,

Using uncoated steel is extremely important here. Parallel keys are exposed to high shear forces and contact pressures. Uncoated steel (particularly hardened or quenched and tempered steel) has better mechanical properties and greater resistance to deformation and damage under load.

What problems do high-grade parallel keys solve?

The primary function of parallel keys is to eliminate slip during torque transmission. This leads to power losses and damage to machine components. Using parallel keys reduces the risk of damage resulting from play or poor fit. This is especially apparent in machines operating under difficult conditions. Vibration and sudden changes in rotational speed and torque can weaken connections. The key protects components from deformation thanks to its materials. The key itself can, of course, wear over time, but that is precisely its role. Cushioning means that instead, machine components do not need to be replaced as frequently, thanks to the parallel key’s action.

Another challenge in torque-transmitting components is axial displacement. Using top-quality parallel keys largely eliminates the risk of movement along the shaft. However, fitting the key alone does not solve this problem. Additional retaining components such as spacer sleeves or thrust rings are required.
