Engineering plastics – semi-finished stock for machining and machine parts

Engineering plastics allow components to be made to the shape specified in a technical drawing: bushes, rollers, guides, inserts and other interacting machine parts. Material selection depends on the component's function and operating conditions. The NERON catalogue includes polyamide rods, sheets and tubes, as well as textolite rods. Choose the stock size with the finished component dimensions and planned machining in mind.

Natural, black and coloured polyamide rods

Round rods are the starting material for turned parts. Choose natural polyamide rods or compare the variants in black, red, green and yellow. Check the diameter, length, plastic designation and tolerances specified for the product. Colour distinguishes variants in the catalogue, but alone does not confirm a lubricant additive, wear resistance or a particular grade.

Polyamide sheets and tubes

Natural polyamide sheets and sheets in black, red, green and yellow can be considered as stock for flat components, inserts or guides once the suitability of the particular variant has been confirmed. Specify the thickness, width and length when choosing. For polyamide tubes the outside diameter, inside diameter and length are required. Compare these dimensions with the drawing of the finished component.

Cast polyamide PA6-G, MoS2 modification and lubricant additives

PA6-G denotes cast polyamide 6, also known as PA6 C. In addition to the basic grade, modified variants are available, including those with molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) or a lubricant additive. Modifications can alter mechanical properties, friction and material wear. For example, manufacturers offer MoS2 grades with increased surface hardness and lubricant-containing grades intended for sliding applications. The properties of a specific product are confirmed by its material data sheet; they should not be attributed to all products of a similar colour.

Textolite rods and selection according to documentation

The round textolite rods section is a separate material group. Compare the grade designation, diameter, length and parameters required by the project. Polyamide and textolite are not automatically interchangeable. If the component must meet electrical, thermal or other special requirements, the properties of the particular variant need to be confirmed.

How to prepare an enquiry for engineering plastic?

• Specify the material and its designation if defined in the documentation.
• State the form: round rod, sheet or tube, together with all dimensions.
• Distinguish between the stock dimensions and the finished component dimensions; specify the required tolerances.
• Describe the application, load, temperature, moisture and contact with substances.
• State the number of pieces, required colour and any requirements for material documentation.

Questions about polyamide and engineering plastics

Does black polyamide always contain MoS2?

Do not identify composition by colour alone. Check the full designation and material description. Modification of a black variant must be confirmed if the project requires it.

Is polyamide with a lubricant additive suitable for every guide?

Selection depends on the specific grade, load and operating conditions of the mating parts. A stated suitability for sliding applications does not replace comparison of the material parameters with the component requirements.

Rod or tube – which should I choose for a component with a hole?

Compare the available outside and inside diameters and the extent of planned machining. A tube may reduce the amount of material to be removed if its dimensions match the design.

Is the catalogue dimension the finished component dimension?

Semi-finished stock may need machining to the dimensions and tolerances on the drawing. Check the product's dimensional conditions and the intended machining allowance before choosing a size.
