Rivet nuts

Rivet nuts for sheet metal, profiles and technical enclosures

A rivet nut creates an internally threaded fixing point in a substrate, allowing another component to be screwed onto it. It is useful for suitably selected thin-walled parts and limited access from the other side. Selection requires checking geometry, material and installation method. Thread diameter must not be confused with permissible sheet thickness or the load capacity of the complete connection.

Open-end and closed-end rivet nuts

Compare open-end rivet nuts and closed-end rivet nuts. For closed-end versions, check the available depth for the screw end. In both groups, selection includes thread size and pitch, grip range, material and body geometry. Hole requirements depend on the specific version; do not select the hole solely by screw size.

Grip range, body and flange

Match the grip range to the actual substrate thickness at the installation point. Body length is a separate dimension and does not replace the thickness range specified by the manufacturer. Also compare the body shape and required hole geometry. The flange affects seating and the contact surface with the next component, so include its diameter and height in the assembly drawing.

Jack Nut AN 247 and neoprene AN 417 versions

Jack Nut AN 247 nuts and neoprene AN 417 versions are distinct fastening solutions. Check the approved substrate, thickness, required hole and installation instructions for the specific model. The term “anti-vibration” does not imply suitability for any vibration or load. Compare these components’ parameters using their own documentation.

Rivet nut tool and material

Choose a tool intended for the selected technology, size and material. For rivet nuts installed with a setting tool, the tool’s threaded mandrel, working range and settings must match the product. An ordinary blind rivet gun is not automatically a rivet nut tool. Consider body material, coating and environmental conditions together with the substrate material.

What should a rivet nut enquiry include?

• Thread size and pitch, and the complete code if known.
• Substrate type and thickness, and hole geometry.
• Open-end or closed-end version, body and flange shape.
• Required material, coating and operating conditions.
• Required quantity and the model of your tool if compatibility needs confirmation.

Questions about rivet nuts

Does an M8 rivet nut require an 8 mm hole?

No. M8 specifies the internal thread. Read the hole size and shape required for the body from the specific product data sheet.

Does a larger thread allow installation in thicker sheet?

This does not follow automatically from thread size. The permissible thickness is determined by the grip range specified for the version.

Can all rivet nuts be installed using the same tool?

Tool, accessory and setting compatibility must be confirmed for the component design, size and material. Different fastening technologies may require different installation methods.

How does a rivet nut differ from a blind rivet?

A rivet nut leaves a threaded fixing point for a screw. A blind rivet joins parts directly and does not provide such a thread. Select mating screws according to the assembly documentation.
