S235 steel — material overview

S235 is a non-alloy structural steel used for structural components and general-purpose parts. A hot-rolled flat bar has a characteristic matt surface that may carry mill scale. Depending on the application, the surface can be prepared for welding or corrosion protection. The full grade variant, delivery condition and properties of the specific batch are determined by the delivery documentation.

Section dimensions

The symbol a denotes flat bar width, t its thickness and L its length. On this card a = 30 mm, t = 10 mm and L = 2000 mm. EN 10058 uses the letter b for width. The end view shows the solid rectangular cross-section, and the side view shows length and thickness. The diagram is illustrative and not drawn to scale.

Standards and tolerances

Dimensions and shape tolerances for hot-rolled steel flat bars are specified in PN-EN 10058:2019-11, adopting EN 10058:2018. The Polish standard replaced PN-EN 10058:2005. The reference for technical delivery conditions of non-alloy structural steel S235 is PN-EN 10025-2:2019-11; conformity of the specific batch is determined by the delivery documentation.

The historical DIN 1017-1:1967-04 was withdrawn and replaced by DIN EN 10058:2004-02, which was superseded by DIN EN 10058:2019-02, implementing EN 10058:2018.

For the offered cross-section, manufacture to EN 10058 has been confirmed: width a = 30 mm has deviations of ±0,750 mm and a range of 29,250–30,750 mm; thickness t = 10 mm has deviations of ±0,500 mm and a range of 9,500–10,500 mm. The length tolerance for the ordered section must be agreed before purchase.

Mass of the sales unit

The theoretical mass follows from nominal dimensions and a steel density of 7850 kg/m³. For dimensions in millimetres: m = a × t × L × 7,85 × 10⁻⁶ × n.
